History

The United Cyprians of America was founded in 1940. It is the first Greek Cypriot representative organization in the metropolitan area of New York. The organization purchased and owns the property it utilizes. Premises otherwise known as “The Kypriakon Spiti” in the past was offered and used as office space by other organizations such as the Cyprus Federation of America. Currently space is offered for the organizations various functions. The United Cyprians of America does not promote any one political party but supports the democratically elected President and Government of the Republic of Cyprus . The organization coordinates the work of Greek Cypriots living in the NY area in the social, cultural and educational spheres and lobbies for and articulates the interests and concerns of the community. The organizations constitution includes all regulations under which the organization operates.

Ladies Division

The United Ladies Division’s activities during the crisis in Cyprus after the Turkish invasion of Cyprus in 1974 include the establishments of the following:
 
  • Cyprus Relief Fund
  • Sponsorship of Refugee Children
  • Blood Banks
  • Telegrams and telephone calls to Senators and Congressmen
  • Participating in demonstrations “Justice for Cyprus” in Washington, DC and New York
  • Collecting clothes and food to be donated to Cypriot refugees
  • Assisting Cypriots while in New York for emergency reasons
  • Collecting donations to purchase equipment for hospitals in Cyprus.
